TRAS

- the Si ATM Test tool for analysis and evaluation of radar infra-structures and tracker systems

SASS-C (Surveillance Analysis System and Support for Centre) is a software toolbox developed by Eurocontrol to provide standardised methods and tools for assessing the performance of Surveillance infrastructure.

Assessment and analysis of surveillance data is done by comparing it against a reference. The TRAS system is using the core concept of SASS-C to build such a reference from data provided by the surveillance infrastructure itself i.e. from the infrastructure to be analysed. The advantage of the method is that the evaluation can be done form opportunity traffic, which is a cheap way to perform evaluations.

TRAS is designed to handle surveillance data from Radar sensors (PSR, SSR) and trackers. It also supports ADS-B and multilateration data.

Modes of operation

The system can be said to have three major modes or system states:

  1. Recording mode
  2. Analysis mode
  3. Playback mode

In “recording mode” the system continuously records time-stamped target data and system tracks. Hence recorded data can be related to events within the tested system itself.

The “analysis mode” is “off-line”, i.e. performed on historical data.

In “Playback mode” the system generates plots (target data) on IP and/or serial interfaces at the same rate as they were received and synchronised with UTC time, whenever necessary in order to suit receiving system.

Functional overview

From a functional point of view the system shall provide the following main functions:

Data handling

  • Retrieval of plot and track data
  • Data storage on SASS-C readable format
  • Data preparation for SASS-C sessions

Playback

  • Target data is generated to external interfaces.

SASS-C tools

  • Radar evaluation
  • Tracking evaluation

System monitoring and control

  • Logging
  • Start/stop

HMI

  • A window-driven HMI is implemented in order to handle and maintain the TRAS system.
